Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer behind a series of unforgettable images worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the light-hued ensembles that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
Price's death comes less than a month after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in designing form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he began working on outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including a number of outfits for her US tour following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
Design circles laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose impact on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
