Chelsea Boss Maresca Rejects Manchester City Speculation as Pure Gossip
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has labelled recent talk connecting him with a move to Manchester City as "100% speculation".
The 45-year-old, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's assistant in Manchester, addressed the ongoing rumours surrounding his next move.
Maresca, appointed Chelsea manager in the summer of 2024, is under contract running until 2029, with a potential extra year option.
"It doesn't affect me at all because I know that is completely unfounded," Maresca stated. "And at this moment, there is little room for these kind of things."
He further elaborated, "First of all, because I have a contract here until 2029. And my attention, I have stated many times, is solely on this club and I'm honoured to be here. But again, it's speculation. One week ago I was connected to Juventus in Italy. So I ignore it because I know that is without foundation."
Chelsea, currently sitting fourth in the top flight, are set to face Newcastle United this Saturday in a lunchtime kick-off.
Tensions Following Recent Comments
Maresca's most recent statement come in the wake of he described a previous two-day spell as his "worst" since arriving at Chelsea.
Those original words had sparked considerable talk of a potential rift between the coach and the club's ownership hierarchy.
When asked if he had discussed matters with the Chelsea's sporting directors, Maresca responded, "We are in the same building, so we talk about various topics. But about the post-Everton media session, no."
The manager did confirm he would definitely remain at the club next season and called on supporters to "continue to support the team".
In brighter news, Maresca revealed that sidelined attackers Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could be back sooner than expected, potentially available for a fixture against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Perspective: An 'Open Wound'
The apparent strain between Maresca and the Chelsea board persists as an open wound that continues to create unease.
While there has been no deepening of the situation publicly, there has equally been no resolution forthcoming, leaving the matter unaddressed.
The mood during these press conferences has become increasingly strained, raising concerns it could undermine what has up to now been a promising beginning to the campaign.
Chelsea's on-field situation is strong: they are in the top four in the Premier League, have reached the League Cup last four, and can secure a better European draw with strong performances in their final games.
The prevailing question is whether this behind-the-scenes dynamic might eventually disrupt a team that was just starting to appear settled.
