Cowboys Proprietor Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture at Spectators
The NFL has imposed a hefty $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he describes as an “unintentional” obscene gesture made toward attendees during a recent game at MetLife Stadium.
Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he insists he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“That was regrettable. It was kind of an interaction with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the signal was entirely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the wrong digit,” he remarked. “The action was accidentally performed. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”
Historical Precedent for Proprietor Fines
This incident isn’t the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Previous examples include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
- Former Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
Jones, who is recognized for his publicity flair, possesses an estimated wealth of around $16bn, making the penalty easily payable for the billionaire proprietor.

The incident follows a contentious preseason for Jones, who faced significant backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team traded star pass rusher Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
