Democrats Denounce Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Execution

Democratic officials demonstrated anger after former President Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and declared they should be arrested and penalized "with execution" following their posting of a contentious video.

The Content That Sparked the Debate

The recorded message, shared on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic lawmakers who in the past acted in military or security capacities.

"As we did, you all took an oath to protect and uphold this founding document," the lawmakers stated in the short video. "And right now, the dangers to our governing document aren't just from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our laws are explicit, you can decline unlawful commands, you can decline improper directives, you have to reject improper directives. No one has to carry out directives that break the statutes or our constitution."

The Former President's Incensed Response

The recorded statement reportedly prompt a furious reply from the former president.

On the following morning, Trump posted on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional post, he stated: "This constitutes really bad, and Dangerous to our Country. Their words cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent post, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Officials Respond

Following Trump's remarks on that day, House Democratic leader released a unified statement denouncing the remarks.

"Political violence has no role in America," they wrote. "Elected officials who appeared in the video all acted our nation with great loyalty and honor. We strongly censure Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous death threats against members of Congress, and appeal to GOP representatives to strongly do the same."

The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to guarantee the security of these members and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must right away delete these extreme digital publications and retract his violent language before he gets someone killed," the declaration stated.

Lawmakers' Defiant Answer

The lawmakers who participated in the video also published a declaration.

"We serve as ex-military personnel and defense specialists who care for this nation and swore an vow to safeguard and defend the national charter of the United States," they said. "That oath continues forever, and we plan to maintain it. No intimidation, pressure, or incitement will stop us from that sacred obligation."

"What's most telling is that the former president deems it subject to penalty by execution for us to repeat the law," they stated. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their backs as they carry out their vow to the constitution and responsibility to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."

They continued: "The entire nation must come together and condemn the former president's requests for our execution and political violence. This is a moment for moral clarity."

More Political Responses

The Senate Democratic leader also condemned Trump's statements and published on social media: "It's important to understand: the former president is demanding the capital punishment of government members."

He stated: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. Every Senator, all representatives, all citizens – regardless of party – should censure this immediately and absolutely."

The GOP leader defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", commenting: "This constitutes very risky, you have prominent officials of the government instructing military personnel to defy commands, I think that's unprecedented in the nation's past."

The GOP official also according to sources told media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's publications, Trump was "explaining the crime of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to parse the terminology and determine all that."

Executive Branch Response

During a administration briefing on later that day, when questioned by a media member, "Does the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary responded: "Certainly not."

"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the official said. "We see current representatives of the American legislature who worked together to arrange a video message to personnel of the US military, to active duty service members encouraging them to ignore the president's proper directives."

She stated: "The integrity of our defense system depends on the hierarchy, and if that chain of command is broken, it can cause people getting killed, it can cause confusion, and precisely what these congressional representatives ... are essentially promoting."
