The game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is not only a strong Game of the Year contender, it’s also a massive sales triumph. Developer Sandfall Interactive along with publisher their publishing partner revealed that this title surpassed 5 million units in sales, and that’s even with it being a day-one release through the Game Pass service.
Its success was a surprise to Sandfall. I was convinced that we would have an enjoyable experience garnering reasonable market performance,” the COO and producer stated.
The CTO and lead programmer noted that Clair Obscur’s review aggregate, now standing at 93, was the most surprising moment to the team relative to our early predictions and the actual outcome proved to be. Once it was published everybody in the studio celebrated excitedly. It felt absolutely wild.”
That success prompted work on a complimentary expansion for the title featuring fresh areas, adversaries, and boss fights, as announced is coming within the “upcoming month[s]”.
Nevertheless, despite the game's evolution, fans shouldn't anticipate the studio to grow. We've built an excellent group guided by a visionary director possessing strong ideas for this game and future concepts. We'd like to keep the small-team dynamic that worked for this game and perhaps create one big game after another,” the executive said.
Their team size sparked plenty of debate when the game came out. Certain industry figures, such as the famed director, looked at Sandfall’s team as a perfect example for a studio. Although the team is and was relatively lean compared to its AAA counterparts, one glance at the title's staff list indicates dozens of people were involved; Sandfall hired a team in Korea to work on gameplay animations, to illustrate.
“We plan to recruit slightly more definitely when facing a future production surge down the line,” they commented. “But I would see essentially a craft studio with a small number of exceptionally gifted creators that create collective masterpieces.” He noted that their core belief as a studio “focuses on preserving the successful elements that made this achievement possible originally.”
Although it's too early for Sandfall to disclose concrete plans what’s next — believe me, efforts were made — the developers understand what’s at its core. “Turn-based gameplay, I think it's in the DNA of our creations,” the lead programmer said. “It's still premature to specify what will interest us, yet we must to remain faithful to the DNA of studio through compelling worlds and engaging mechanics that inspires the team.”
They added that the project began with their director “work[ing] on his dream game. It is hoped that's something will be repeated as well for future productions.”
