MTG players often adopt tribe-based decks — who hasn't assembled an elf strategy at some point? — while this upcoming ATLA crossover release revives 2 well-known mechanics which align perfectly with the theme.
One initial mechanic, known as "Allies," was introduced with the Zendikar set and grants buffs whenever additional creatures bearing the Ally subtype enter the battlefield.
On the other hand, "Shrines" is an enchantment type which first appeared in Champions of Kamigawa. Although not a creature tribal theme, these enchantments also gain power when you owns additional of them in play.
Although Shrines have been appeared here and there in newer sets, Allies subtype has been seldom seen — until that changes with Avatar: The Last Airbender, in which the mechanic is heavily featured.
The protagonist Aang must gather many allies on his quest to bring back peace to the four nations, and it's no better method to reflect that in a Magic: The Gathering expansion.
After the initial card announcement, here is previews of an Ally plus one Shrine card from the new ATLA set.
Teo is a popular supporting character from Avatar: The Last Airbender, a boy from the Earth Tribe who resided at an Air Temple after his home was ruined by a flood, an event that left him paraplegic.
Because of his father's skill with mechanics, he can soar through the skies with his glider, and challenges the Avatar in a flying contest.
The card Teo, Spirited Glider represents his fondness of flying along with the Earth Tribe's reliance of flying machines through letting the player loot whenever a player attacks using a flying creature, and also pumping your creatures with +1/+1 counters in the process.
Speaking of his dwelling, this is represented in the card The Northern Air Temple, that drains an opponent's life when entering the battlefield, based on the number of Shrines you control.
It also removes an additional life whenever another Shrine comes onto the battlefield.
This appears to be an impactful card, given its cheap cost and good enter the battlefield ability.
A big weakness for Shrine-based strategies in formats besides EDH is that Shrines are typically Legendary, but Northern Air Temple can be effective when paired alongside Sanctum of Stone Fangs, which drains all opponents during the start of your main phase.
Currently when Universes Beyond sets are receiving a lot of hate from fans, an iconic franchise like Avatar: The Last Airbender could be precisely just what Magic: The Gathering requires.
Spoiler season has begun, and the full set will be released November 21st.
