France will start intercepting small boats in English Channel after British demands
France has agreed to start intercepting migrant vessels in the Channel, following months of insistence from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift comes after the Prime Minister wrote to the French leader asking him to back the plan and saying there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police will be allowed to stop the small boats at sea, but only before they've picked up their migrants, according to official confirmation.
French police have rarely acted to prevent the heavily loaded boats leaving the shoreline because it is viewed as excessively high a risk to both officers and civilians.
"It is essential that we implement these methods this period... We have no effective prevention in the Channel."
Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson states personnel will start taking action at sea, with the objective of safeguarding lives.
Significantly, the spokesperson ruled out the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had earlier been suggested as a possible technique to disable the propellers of the vessels.
This determination to take action at all is a significant step forward, following a short-lived change towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which dropped off when the former Interior Minister departed from government.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, in the run-up to a meeting between the UK leader and President, when authorities were witnessed walking into the sea to slash the hulls of a vessel.
Now French authorities will again be permitted to stop boats before they collect migrant passengers from the beaches of northern France, however it's not clear how the vessels will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are currently delaying the start of interceptions and the people-smuggling gangs will be looking for methods to adapt to avoid interception, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
UK immigration authorities and Downing Street have been approached for comment.
