Citizens have gathered across the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-initiated attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations advanced in Egypt over a conclusion to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The incident led to more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jews since the World War II.

Israel answered by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are considered accurate by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"Our bloodthirsty enemies have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on that day.

He also pledged to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will not pose a danger to Israel".

Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel

The national leadership delayed state remembrance events until 16 October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still were held throughout the country on that day.

A commemorative event for the families of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was aired throughout Israeli TV networks.

A period earlier, a moment of silence was held throughout the country.

Peace Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams gathered in the North African coastal city of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to discuss the conditions of the plan.

A prominent representative knowledgeable about the negotiations said that an late session of mediated discussions commenced at evening in Egypt.

The source said the earlier meeting finished without concrete outcomes, due to disagreements over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not restart combat after the initial stage of the agreement.

He added that the negotiations are "tough and have still not produce any real breakthrough," but pointed out that facilitators are working hard to narrow the differences between the both parties.

Key Points in Discussions

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The swap of the captives still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The removal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Plans for relief supplies distribution
  • Post-war management of the region

Civilian Sentiment

In the city's memorial area that day, young a woman - whose family member survived the incident on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were murdered and numerous more were captured by Hamas gunmen - told: "No location feels like home now and until all the hostages return not a single person will have peace of mind."

"When we see everybody home once more, we can feel relief anew. Then we can begin to rebuild," she added.

In front of the leader's residence in the capital, people congregated to express their solidarity for the families of the captives. Israel says 48 stay in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.

Protester a participant remarked: "It's necessary do any agreement needed for the captives to come back home. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be secure."

Opinion polls now regularly indicate that about 70% of Israeli citizens want the conflict to end in return for the freedom of the hostages.

Gaza Conditions

At the location of Nova festival, those paying respects gathered to honor the dead.

From the site, the sound of military attacks and explosions could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people reported the intense Israeli attacks carried on.

In the main city, bombardments were noted in the dawn of that day in the western neighborhood, sector and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the east side district of the community, as well the camp to the northwest.

"Once the dusk comes, the dread comes with it," displaced Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli air strike last year, shared.

"My family are terrified of the bombings. All the night we are sleeping together, clinging, notably my little child who rests his face on me the entire evening."

"Every second we monitor the updates to see developments. And I'm worried that this truce will not be completed and that the fighting will resume to us."

Medical Situation

The healthcare center in the urban area said it had accepted the remains of six people by the afternoon, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the southern area.

Another medical facility in the southern urban center of that area said additional fatalities had been delivered. A person was killed by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get assistance to the southern area, health workers said.

The region's health ministry reported 25 of the {territ
