James understood his monumental run of scoring in double figures was at risk. When it mattered most, though, it didn't concern him.
The right decision meant distributing the rock – and he executed. Consequently, the legendary streak was over.
James's staggering run of 1,297 consecutive NBA regular season outings scoring at least ten concluded during a recent game, as basketball's greatest scorer finished with eight total points in the Lakers' close triumph versus the Toronto Raptors. He delivered the clutch helper, setting up Rui Hachimura for a three-pointer to win the game.
“None,” James replied in response regarding the conclusion of his run. “We won.”
James could have attempted to win the game – and extended the streak – in the closing seconds, but he chose to make the extra pass to Hachimura on the wing. Rui connected, prompting James celebrated immediately.
It's about playing the game the proper way. Always make the correct play,” James explained. “That’s just been my philosophy. It's how I learned the game. I've played that way my whole career.”
James is very conscious of how many points he's scored at any point,” commented the team's head coach JJ Redick. “He did it like he’s done throughout his career.”
He returned to the game for the final time with 5:23 remaining, the win and his personal record on the line. At that stage, he had six points from 3 for 15 from the field by that point.
He scored at under two minutes remaining to knot the score and missed a 14-footer with one minute to go which could have pushed him to ten points.
He didn’t take one more attempt – though the opportunity was there. Austin Reaves found him in the waning seconds, but James opted to dish it off instead.
“The basketball gods, if you approach it correctly, they often reward you,” Redick stated.
James's streak commenced back in January 2007. It stood as the longest such streak the league has ever seen: Michael Jordan had 866 straight games with 10+ points, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar recorded 787, and Karl Malone was fourth on the list with 575.
He is such a team-oriented player,” remarked teammate a fellow Laker.
“He’s just playing the game of basketball. He could have shot but due to who he is on the court and just who he is as an individual, he executed the pass, dished to Hachimura and claimed the victory.”
Reaching double digits had long been an afterthought long before the fourth quarter began. Over the course of the record, he had achieved the 10-point mark by the beginning of the final quarter on the vast majority of occasions before this game.
But two of those rare games below ten points through three quarters had happened in the last week: He recorded nine entering the final quarter against Dallas on 28 November, and then had six points before the fourth quarter versus the Suns earlier in the week.
He succeeded in keep the streak alive against the Suns. In the following contest, it concluded – and he celebrated anyway.
My focus is to make the best play. That is instinctive, win, lose or draw,” James declared. When you make the right play, the sports deities consistently rewarding me.”
