The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that was a central issue during his election bid.

An Iconic Home

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors since the World War II era.

But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core issue, did not confirm his residency plans right away following his victory in November.

"The choice rested on our family's safety and the need to focusing my complete efforts on carrying out the agenda for affordability New Yorkers elected me on," stated Mamdani in a statement.

A Fond Farewell

His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area famous for its abundance of cultural enclaves and global cuisine.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Although my address will change in Astoria, it will forever remain inside me and the work I do," he affirmed.

Political Debate

Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.

Yet his rivals, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing although he hails from a famous family.

Previous Exceptions

Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a venue for civic gatherings, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.

A Stately Residence

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will experience an environment far removed from his humble Astoria apartment.

Featuring pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.

Inside, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The estate, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

His former home is rent stabilised, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much property owners can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers see such units as crucial resources as the price of rent exceeds the average income.

Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
