Prison Shock: The FormerPresident Bolsonaro Faces Time Behind Bars

He fought the law and the law triumphed.

A couple of months following being handed a twenty-seven-year sentence for attempting to “eradicate” Brazil’s democracy, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro finally looks jail-bound.

Imminent Jailing

The adjudicated instigator – who's been subject to house arrest in his residence while a series of judicial steps and challenges unfold – is widely expected to be imprisoned in the near future, amidst growing talk that he will be moved to a notorious top-security penitentiary.

Past Remarks on Prisoners

During Bolsonaro’s long public life, the far-right former soldier exhibited minimal mercy for the country's jailed individuals.

“For what reason must we give those lowlifes a good life?” he once mused. “They should just get messed, full-fucking-stop. That's my opinion.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “If you don’t want to wind up in prison, the only thing required is not sexual assault, kidnap or rob.”

Incarceration Destination Debate

However the possibility of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has appalled allies, a group of four this week inspected the prison in an apparent attempt to discourage the high court from banishing him there.

The senator, a senator from Bolsonaro’s political party who was one of the visitors, claimed he predicted the 70-year-old leader to be incarcerated in the following week and a half and feared his destination could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s severe intestinal issues – the result of a life-threatening knife attack during the last presidential campaign – meant it would be dangerous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His condition is very grave. He won’t be able to manage if they move him to Papuda … It will be terrible,” he commented, who also worried about cramped cells and the quality of jail cuisine.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas recalled observing cells holding four dozen prisoners: “That is virtually one square meter per inmate.

“We talked to the prisoners and they protest, naturally, of the awful meals,” continued the senator.

Allies React

The senator isn't the lone figure expressing views before the one-time head of state's expected incarceration.

Authoring in a leading newspaper, one more backer, the ex- government official Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “harsh” end to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” public service and alleged Brazil was about to see “the biggest unfairness in its history”.

“It represents an unfairness that erodes the souls of many Brazilian citizens,” he stated.

Varied General Response

That may be accurate due to the considerable support Bolsonaro retains on the conservative side. Yet his predicted jailing has also warmed the spirits of numerous other people who think he should be incarcerated for conspiring to stop the elected leader from assuming office – and even conspiring to have him killed.

Reimont Otoni, a congressman for the sitting administration's Workers’ party, commented: “Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in a hole. No one wants Bolsonaro to be put in segregation. Nobody wants Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to lie on concrete. We wish him to get respectful care – but proper care in prison. He must not continue being his personal jailer for his entire life.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro backers, who have spent years praising the tough handling of prisoners, had unexpectedly woken up to their entitlements. “Recently has the far-right – which has repeatedly argued that human rights should not be for lawbreakers – opted to inspect a jail to learn what circumstances are actually like,” he remarked.

“The former president is a criminal,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he deserved “shameful, degrading handling”.

Potential Incarceration Conditions

Regardless of speculation that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which currently holds about 14,000 detainees, his expected destination looks to be a adjacent prison for police officers and other “particular” detainees called Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

The accommodations are considerably more pleasant than those in the larger jail, although nevertheless a world away from the opulence Bolsonaro experienced while occupying the stunning official residence, about 20 kilometers away.

As per reports, the cell Bolsonaro could expect to inhabit in Papudinha measures about 260 square feet – about the size of a couple of car spots – and features a 130 square foot bathroom with a water facility and a 130 square foot terrace. “Bolsonaro would be allowed to have a television and additionally a minibar in his quarters as long as they were provided by his relatives,” sources stated.

Ideological Reactions

The lawmaker denounced the rumoured plan to send the former leader to Papuda as “a form of retaliation” on the part of the judicial authority who led Bolsonaro’s legal case and will decide his future in the {
