Springbok Player Jan-Hendrik Wessels Receives Nine-Match Ban for Genital Grab
Wessels will miss for the Springboks' autumn internationals.
Springbok prop Jan-Hendrik Wessels has been suspended of nine games for making contact with Josh Murphy's private parts during the Bulls' URC win over Connacht.
The incident occurred in the early stages of the Bulls' 28-27 win against Connacht on Friday, with Connacht forward Murphy being shown a 20-minute red card after reacting angrily by striking the South African on the head.
After the Connacht player reported the incident to referee Mike Adamson, the situation was reviewed by the television match official, who concluded insufficient clear footage.
The Bulls player stayed on the pitch until he was replaced in the second half of the game.
While the United Rugby Championship confirmed that Murphy's temporary sending-off was withdrawn by a governing body, Wessels was deemed to have violated the code of conduct, which specifies:
"Any athlete should not engage in actions that is against the spirit of good sportsmanship. Such behavior covers grabbing, pulling or compressing the private areas."
The panel were satisfied that the incident reached the level for dismissal and justified a 12-week suspension, the shortest ban under World Rugby regulations for such an infringement.
However, Wessels' ban was reduced by 21 days because of his cooperative behavior during the hearing and his good record.
The forward and the Bulls are entitled to appeal, but as it stands, the ban will rule the young player out of the South African national team's autumn Tests against the Brave Blossoms, Les Bleus, the Azzurri and Ireland.
He will additionally be absent for the his club's league matches against Warriors, the Emirates Lions and the Cell C Sharks, as well as Investec Champions Cup games with Bègles and Saints.
Wessels has won 10 caps for South Africa and was included in their tri-nations champion team during the recent tournament.
The Connacht player, meanwhile, is eligible to face Munster in Saturday's domestic clash after being cleared.
