The Gunners' Disputed Partnership Agreement with Visit Rwanda Is Ending In the Upcoming Season

Arsenal Football Club has confirmed that its much-debated sponsorship partnership with Visit Rwanda will come to an end in June this upcoming year.

Context and Criticism

This deal, said to be worth around £10 million annually, began in 2018 and has since come under fire.

Such scrutiny is due to accusations of Rwandan assistance for the M23 militia in ongoing conflicts in the eastern part of the adjacent DRC.

In February, Arsenal faced allegations of committing a disrespectful act to the Congolese government by not arranging a meeting with the DRC's foreign minister to talk about the deal.

Agreement Framework and Goals

Visit Rwanda operates as an arm of the Rwanda Development Board, which is a state institution.

Many speculate that Arsenal signed and continued this partnership mainly to grow their fanbase in Africa.

However, the arrangement has now concluded after both parties “collectively determined” to end their collaboration.

“Together, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have surpassed the primary aims of the partnership – advocating preservation and sustainable tourism, motivating countless fans to visit the nation, and establishing a durable base for travel industry expansion,” read an club announcement.

The release further noted that the partnership has also aided Rwanda's ambition to become an worldwide athletic destination in Africa and welcome more worldwide tournaments while delivering grassroots football initiatives that have supported many aspiring footballers and coaches enhance their abilities and encourage more involvement in sport across the country.

Management Opinion and Fan Backlash

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's CEO, portrayed the arrangement as a “important voyage” and asserted it had been “advancing” the club's goals.

But that is not how a portion of the Gunners' supporters, with the activist organization Gunners for Peace holding rallies outside the Emirates Stadium during the first semi-final encounter in Europe's premier competition against Paris Saint-Germain in April's conclusion.

Activists unveiled a placard declaring “Terminate the Visit Rwanda Partnership” and distributed armbands to hide the partnership emblem on uniforms.

Industry Perspective and Fellow Clubs

During that period, Paris Saint-Germain continued their sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda until 2028.

Simultaneously, the Spanish club entered a new agreement for the identical duration that has caused the branding featured on the Spanish club's first-team and women's team jerseys.
