The Academy Awards will commence broadcasting solely on the global video platform in 2029, representing the newest substantial change in the film industry.
The organization behind the Oscars made the announcement on Wednesday, confirming that it entered into a long-term agreement awarding YouTube the exclusive global rights to the Oscars up to 2033.
The Oscars, set for 15 March, has been broadcast for a half a century on ABC. Beginning in 2029, the ceremony will be accessible in real-time without charge on the digital platform.
This is one more major restructuring in Hollywood, which is navigating company buyouts and fusions, coupled with drastic slashes to movie budgets.
"The Academy is an international organization, and this alliance will enable us to increase availability to the mission of the Academy to the largest worldwide audience possible - which will be advantageous for our membership and the film community," stated the Academy's executives in a announcement.
For many years, ratings of the televised event have fallen, although there was a minor increase in 2025, with a notable portion of youthful audiences streaming from mobile devices and computers.
In a corresponding announcement, YouTube's CEO referred to the Oscars "among our fundamental pillars of culture" and added that working with the Academy would "spark a new generation of artistic expression and film lovers while staying true to the Oscars' celebrated heritage".
The broadcast network, which has aired the ceremony since 1976, said that it was eagerly anticipating "to the next three telecasts" it will retain rights for.
This decision comes as major studios deal with challenging merger discussions. These potential deals were viewed as problematic for an industry that has experienced drastic cuts over the past several years.
Like major studios, cable networks have encountered challenges as the public has shifted towards digital platforms instead.
The platform securing the license to the Oscars further suggests that the dominance of streaming sites will continue increasing.
