Thiago Pitarch in action
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for the Spanish giants, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

When an teenage makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a key Champions League tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.

In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a three-nil round of 16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to secure a last eight berth.

Aged 18 years old, the midfielder became the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise From The Academy

This talent is the latest to come through from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.

Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and drive he added to the team.

'His Best Attribute Is His Character'

During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso called up Pitarch to practice with the first team and gave him minutes in pre-season.

Yet, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing football, every day you head to training and every day you play a match," said the player after his debut.

"I have just achieved my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.

Pitarch has taken it with displays that have defied his youth and experience.

"He's a very quick footballer, and you can see his capabilities," said the coach. "He is incredibly energetic, with great stamina, work-rate and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.

"His standout trait is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize fans might be astonished to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to do his normal game.

"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before entering the club's famous La Fabrica system.

He holds both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the choice to represent both nations at senior international level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a competitive full international.

He has played for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are watching his progress with interest.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision in the near future."

This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for La Roja, Brahim opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He played over an hour in the two-one win at City, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the club pursue trophies to come.

Following his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"The manager handles me the same. We handle it very naturally. I try not to think about it too much - I must earn my playing time on the field," he commented after the success at Etihad Stadium.
