The Showrunner Discloses He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Might Finish... For Now.

Vince Gilligan never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

With the first season of the hit series wrapping up—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.

Regarding the Overwhelming Viewer Reception

One could easily to get distracted by the constant speculation and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to avoid both.

“The experience is akin to force fed hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it from others, and that's by design. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”

Despite his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by what people are saying.”

“Better to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.

A Pressing Query: Will the showrunner See the Finale of Pluribus?

Given that the writers aren’t being guided by fan response, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… sort of.

“We have some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to abandon a good idea for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”

On the other hand, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.

“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”

Of course, why mess with the iconic TV endings?

“I'd love for Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.

Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
